Man Accused Of Shooting SD Trooper Is A Former Police Officer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A man accused of shooting a Highway Patrol trooper during a standoff near Kimball is a former law officer himself.

Forty-two-year-old Donald London was a police officer in Wheatland, Wyoming, in 1998-99. His career there ended when he was imprisoned for passing counterfeit money.

Wheatland Police Chief Randy Chesser says London was accused of passing a phony $20 bill at a restaurant, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five months in federal prison.

London is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in last week's standoff, which authorities say began when London and his father allegedly threatened officers. The trooper who was shot will recover.

London's father, Michael, also is a former officer, with the Chamberlain Police Department and Brule County Sheriff's Department in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
