Friends, Family Remember Man Killed By SPPD

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) -- St. Paul police are releasing more information about the officer-involved shooting Wednesday that took the life of 24-year old Marcus Golden.

Police were responding to a woman's complaint about getting death threats in text messages from Marcus when they say he drove at them. Marcus was shot and killed.

No officers were injured. Golden had a loaded handgun "within immediate reach," but whether the gun had been fired remains under investigation, police said Thursday.

The St. Paul NAACP is calling for an independent investigation into the shooting.

WCCO sat down Thursday with some of Marcus' friends and family.

"It's that smile, it's that contagiousness, that energy that he brought into a room that, it was infectious," Corey Colden, Marcus' uncle, said.

Corey says it was hard to be sad when his nephew was around. He says the Marcus he knew was kind, loving and was always there for those he cared about.

Michael and Mark Parranto grew up with Marcus in the Lexington-Hamline area of St. Paul.

"He was always the funny one, but never the one to make himself stand out," Michael said.

The Parrantos say Marcus loved hard, and was all about helping others.

"He loved his friends very much but he loved his family so much more -- his brothers and his sister and his mom," Mark said. "He took care of his grandmother and his grandfather, like, so well. He lived with them until the end."

And it's the end of Marcus' life they hope to learn more about soon. But for now, they'll focus on memories of the past to help them deal with the present.

Marcus' family and friends are asking for calm while the investigation into his death continues.
