Swarza, Carrasco, Rzepczynski, Chisenall Agree With Indians
CLEVELAND (AP) — Former Minnesota right-hander Anthony Swarzak agreed Thursday to a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians, who also agreed to one-year contracts with right-hander Carlos Carrasco, left-hander Marc Rzepczynski and third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall that avoided arbitration.
Carrasco got a one-year deal for $2,337,500 and Rzepczynski for $2.4 million plus the chance to earn a $25,000 bonus for 65 games. Chisenhall was guaranteed $2.25 million and can earn award bonuses.
Swarzak, a 29-year-old free agent, spent his third consecutive season with the Twins in 2014, going 3-2 with a 4.60 ERA in four starts and 46 relief appearances. He became a free agent in November when he refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Rochester of the International League.
Swarzak had been with the Twins' organization for his entire professional career after his second-round selection in the 2004 amateur draft. His 237 1-3 innings of relief are the second-most in the major leagues since 2012.
Swarzak's best season was 2013, when he was 3-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 48 games.
Carrasco was 8-7 with a 2.55 ERA in 14 starts and 26 relief appearances last year, earning a raise from $504,700. Rzepczynski was 0-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 73 relief appearances, allowing 42 hits in 46 innings while striking out 46. He earned $1,425,000.
Chisenhall hit .280 with 13 homers and 59 RBIs, and made $510,800.
