Mike's Mix: The Warm Fashioned

Every Friday, Mike Augustyniak picks up a new cocktail recipe from a local mixologist. This week, he headed over to The Mill Northeast and to make the drink, you'll need to draw a warm bath.

Mike's Mix: The Warm Fashioned

Ingredients
2 oz Bulleit Rye
1 oz hot water
1/2 oz Maple Simple (*instructions below)
5 dashes Fee's Whiskey Barrel-aged bitters

Pre-warm a sherry glass with hot water. In a separate container mix the rye, water and maple simple, keep this container bathed in hot water. Dump the hot water from the sherry glass, add a Griottine brandy-soaked cherry and the bitters. Pour the cocktail from the warming vessel into the sherry glass.

* Maple Simple - 2 parts real maple syrup, 1 part brown sugar, 1 part water. Bring to a boil, reduce, simmer for 10 minutes. Chill.

The Taste Test

If alcohol vapors coming off of a Hot Toddy or a Hot Buttered Rum burn your nose and make you turn your head you might want to try a warm drink instead.

The "Warm Fashioned" at The Mill Northeast will warm you up from the inside without the alcohol burn.  The trick to making the drink warm, and not hot, is mixing the drink in a container that is surrounded by a warm water bath – like a double boiler.  Sound like a lot of work?  Ryley Gahagan, bartender at The Mill Northeast, said "that's how good cocktails are made; you've got to put in the effort."

The Warm Fashioned is on the menu for $8.50, and most other cocktails are $9.
