Como Zoo Brings Students On Week-Long Field Trip

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - All students love a field trip, and schools love when it doesn't cost them a thing.

Students from 11 lucky schools get to spend a week at the Como Zoo each semester.

It doesn't cost the schools a penny. Como Zoo even picks the students up and drops them off every day.

"They're like, 'I wish our week was longer, I wish we could come here all the time,'" Sarah Olson, the zoo's residency program coordinator, said.

They're also learning, even if it is disguised in a lot of fun.

"I learned a lot about the rain forest," one student said.

Students get to spend time observing the animals, chatting with zookeepers.

"We do hands-on stuff at the zoo and the conservatory," Olson said. "We focus on STEM activities. For science, they go out and observe the animals."

The program gives students time out of the classroom and out in the real world of the zoo.

Como Zoo is hoping to continue this program next year.

They also offer classes for anyone from preschool to adults all year long.
