Movie Blog: This Week's Best Bets

The days are growing longer, the breezes don't quite feel as arctic, and a crop of new movies is in season.

One of them, the clever vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows, is still playing at Minneapolis' Lagoon Cinema, and this Friday Chappie, the new film from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, is at the Minnesota Zoo's IMAX theatre.

For some other options, you'll want to check out the latest dump of movies added to Netflix streaming, and a free film festival at the Walker Art Center. Also, don't forget that my favorite Pedro Almodovar film is playing over at the Trylon.

New On Netflix: Top Gun, Taxi Driver, Patch Adams (Streaming)

If you already plowed through the new season of House of Cards, there's a bunch of new oldies on Netflix's streaming service. They include the three named above, as well as Tank Girl, Beverly Hills Cop, Event Horizon, and a bunch of others. While many of them were probably streaming at one point or another, you might want to check out the list and go nostalgia tripping as we brace for snow on Tuesday.

Friday, March 6: Talk To Her (Trylon Microcinema)

If you don't know Almodovar, this is a great place to start. The Spaniard won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for this gem back in 2002, and it remains my favorite from his massive, and hugely impressive body of work. The narrative connects two tragic love stories, and features an unforgettable film-within-a-film, as well as a heart-shredding performance by Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. Watch it.

Saturday, March 7: Kids' Film Festival (Walker Art Center)

This is part of the museum's Raising Creative Kids program, and it's free. Yup, free. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., families can show up at the Walker Cinema to watch any of 10 short films as well as the Academy Award-nominated animated feature, The Song of the Sea. And if the little ones get all restless, parents can take them to do some storyboard art at the Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab. Also, gallery admission is gratis on Saturday.
