Senate OKs 8 Dayton Appointees, Leaves Big Names For Later

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A handful of Gov. Mark Dayton's cabinet appointees are officially on the job.

The state Senate on Thursday quickly approved eight commissioners on Thursday. They were appointed earlier this year but can start working until the Senate turns them down. Most are in their second terms.

Some Senate Republicans objected to swelling spending at the Department of Education under Commissioner Brenda Cassellius. But Democrats control the Senate so her confirmation still sailed through.

The majority Republican House doesn't have to sign off on gubernatorial appointments.

More contentious appointments for the Department of Commerce and a new chair of the Metropolitan Council are still awaiting the Senate's approval.
