Vermont Lawmaker Reviews Minnesota Mental Health Case

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A longtime Vermont advocate for patients in the mental health system is closely monitoring events in Minnesota, where she participated in a review of a drug test in which a mentally ill man later took his own life.

Rep. Anne Donahue, R-Northfield, says she's not able to comment directly on her work on a review panel that faulted leadership of the psychiatry department at the University of Minnesota in the 2004 death of Dan Markingson.

Last month's report by the panel that included Donahue has been followed by a separate audit that sharply criticized the university, saying top officials there have routinely ignored conflicts of interest and other ethical lapses by people involved in the Markingson case.

Donahue has built a national reputation for expertise on mental health issues.
