Ex-Minnesota Star, Olympian Darwitz Named Hamline Coach

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP/WCCO) — Former Minnesota star and three-time Olympic medalist Natalie Darwitz has agreed to become women's hockey coach at Hamline.

Hamline announced the hiring Monday.

Darwitz was a three-time All-American at Minnesota and is the school's all-time leader in points scored with 246.

Darwitz also has represented the U.S. in three Olympics, eight World Tournaments and 10 Four Nations Cup events. She has been a captain of several of those teams, a member of five gold-medal winning teams and, in 2005, was named Woman Player of the Year by USA Hockey.

Darwitz was a Gophers assistant for two seasons before taking the head job at Lakeville South four years ago. This year, she guided the Cougars to a 24-6-1 record and a first-ever berth in the Minnesota Class AA girls hockey tournament.

WCCO Radio's Al Schoch spoke to Darwitz about her past accomplishments, and the future of Hamline hockey.
