This Week In Movies: MSPIFF 2015 Kicks Off

This week is all about the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival. Things get rolling on Thursday, when the weeks-long festival begins with screenings of a wonderfully titled film, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, at the St. Anthony Main Theatre. After those screenings, there'll be an opening night party for the festival at the nearby Aster Café.

Tickets for the festival, which is put on by the Film Society of Minneapolis-St. Paul, are available here. Tickets for individual screenings run $12 for the general public and $10 for film society members. Students can get in for $6.

Passes for the festival, which is more than 200 films strong, are also available. They're pricey, but they'll give you access to a huge number of films and entry into festival parties.

Following the opening night celebration, there'll be several screenings each day (mostly at St. Anthony Main) until the festival ends on April 25. Each day of the festival, WCCO.com will post a capsule review of the day's highlight film, as well as information on what else is screening that day.

As for other movie stuff, there's a neat-looking documentary by Ethan Hawke that starts Friday, and dozens of movies have dropped on Netflix streaming already this month, including The Big Lebowski, Titanic and The Graduate.

Friday, April 10: Seymour: An Introduction (Edina Cinema)

As far as I know, this is Ethan Hawke's first documentary, and it's about a virtuoso pianist who ended his performing career early in order to teach music. The man's name is Seymour Bernstein, and he's a friend of Hawke's. But the movie isn't about their relationship; it's about the lives of artists, or those seeking to master a craft. Talent and fame aren't the focus. Instead, the film is about dedication, perseverance and the quest for beauty. And if the film doesn't prove as inspirational as the trailer lets on, it's likely to at least offer some great piano pieces to incorporate into your Spotify playlists.

New On Netflix: Dozens Of New Movies For April (Netflix Streaming)

If you can't make it to the film festival and the rain is keeping you indoors this week, there's a lot of new stuff to watch on Netflix. Aside from the feature films added, such as Braveheart, Mommie Dearest and American Psycho, there are also dozens of documentaries and TV shows up, including season 4 of Bob's Burgers and James Cameron's Deepsea Challenge.
