Black DA To Decide Charges Against White Wisconsin Officer
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — In several high-profile U.S. cases in the past year, white prosecutors have declined to charge white police officers who killed black men.
That won't be the case in a recent police-involved shooting in the Wisconsin capital of Madison, where the decision about whether to charge the white officer rests in the hands of a liberal biracial prosecutor who identifies as black.
Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne must decide whether charges are warranted in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Tony Robinson last month. Robinson, who was biracial, was shot and killed by a white Madison police officer, Matt Kenny.
Some in the black community have called on Ozanne to charge Kenny in Robinson's killing. Attorneys who have worked with Ozanne say they are confident he will consider the facts impartially.
