Fans Across Minnesota Flock To Target Field For Twins Home Opener

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The baseball home opener is a time when Twins fans can dream big. A sold-out crowd filed into Target Field full of excitement Monday afternoon, in anticipation of what this season will bring.

Sure the team came in 1 and 5, and now they're down one more game, but the score didn't detract from the tradition.

"I'm hoping World Series champs. I'm hoping," Bonnie Nelson of Roseville said.

There's an excitement in the air. The free giveaways, and there's something unmistakable about ballpark food.

"There's something about having a brat at the ball game, and a burger and beer or root beer, and just watching baseball with nice weather," Joel Farmer of Sioux Falls, S.D. said.

For Hazel Brown of Edina, it's about having three generations of her family watching the game together.

"We're all fans," she said.

The 91-year-old said she's been to every Twins home opener since the team moved to Minnesota in the 60s.

"It's something very special. There's nothing like it," she said. "Of course, I like to come to all the games, I don't care if it's the opener or not."

And sharing that tradition with her daughter and granddaughter makes it kind of magical.

"Baseball is just something we've all shared with our whole family for so many years. I remember coming out when I was a kid," daughter Katie Sayre said.

This game marks the first home opener for Chase Carlson.

"The best part is watching them play baseball and getting all the homeruns," Carlson said.

Those runs unfortunately came from the other team on the field.

They're playing like they've never been coached in their life, and that's about it," said one fan.

Despite a tough first loss at home, some Twins fans remain optimistic.

"They just need to calm down," Patti Johnson said.

"That's right, it's still early," chimed in her husband Kevin.
