'Roots In Minnesota' Celebrates Arbor Day With Local Planting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Do you have Minnesota roots?

"Yes" sounds like the obvious answer. But, we're not talking about heritage, we're talking about green space.

Earth Day was Wednesday, and this Friday some Minnesotans are celebrating Arbor Day in conjunction with a campaign called "Roots in Minnesota."

The campaign is encouraging Minnesotans to add a little more foliage to the front yard this spring.

Jeff Loso, president of Minnesota Society of Arboriculture, says the biggest mistake homeowners make when planting trees is over mulching. He said if you do plant a new tree in your yard this spring you should be watering it with at least 20 gallons of water a week. He recommends watering the tree weekly for two years

The Minnesota DNR is celebrating Arbor Month in May.

If you are thinking about doing a little yard work this summer you can stop by Horton Park Friday in St. Paul over lunch to celebrate.
