It's Official! Andrew Wiggins Is Rookie Of The Year

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves confirmed that Andrew Wiggins has been named the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Not that there was much suspense or contention over the choice. Wiggins won 110 first-choice votes. The next runner up was Chicago's Nikola Mirotic, who only earned 14 first-choice votes.

"I am honored and humbled to be recognized by the media for this award," Wiggins said. "I'd like to thank our coaches and my teammates for all they have done to help me and support me this season. I'm looking forward to taking my game to an even higher level next year and helping our team make a significant improvement."

Philadelphia's Nerlens Noel and Orlando's Elfrid Payton each got three first-choice votes.

Wiggins was one of the bright spots in what was otherwise a miserable year for the Minnesota Timberwolves. They won just 16 games, but have the best statistical chance to get the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.

Wiggins is the first player in the history of the Timberwolves to win the Rookie of the Year Award. He averaged nearly 17 points per game in his first season and started all 82 games.
