Get Movin' Monday: Prom Dress Trends

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Prom can be a stressful time for teenagers.

Perhaps the biggest stressor is what to wear. Especially for girls, because those photos seem to stay around forever!

Some of the WCCO This Morning team shared photos of themselves in their dresses, and the trends definitely defined the decade.

Prom dresses usually reflect the year's big trends, and sometimes can even predict the next season's trends.

So what's hot this year? Well, forget big and frilly!

"It's fun to have the ultra-ball gown, but it's not something economical that you're going to be able to have fun with again," Minneapolis based stylist, Grant Whittaker, said.

That's why sometimes the biggest trend is a classic.

"Black can be overwhelming, especially if you're young," Whittaker said.

Teenagers should truly think Little Black Dress. Go short or look at lace for a little cover-up.

"Just thinking seasonally and just thinking what's really in trend, we get a little bit of that nude neckline," Whittaker said.

Adding a little shine can help you coordinate shoes and jewelry, things that might already be in your closet.

Cut is important in any dress, but if you go with a bold color, which is in this season, make sure you have the right structure.

Then there are those who really want to shine. Nude allows you to play with hair and jewelry.

Whittaker said don't be afraid of a nude color – embrace it!

"It can be very lengthening for the body," Whittaker said.

And just think of all the handbag, corsage or jewelry options you could mix with a neutral!

As dresses can range from $90 to $400, it can be helpful to look at a range of places.

Whittaker also suggests girls shop local as there will likely better deals at boutiques. Or look at a consignment shops or EBAY if you like a certain designer.
