Legislative Overtime Could Hinder Capitol Renovations

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A state official overseeing Capitol renovations says failing to wrap up the legislative session by Monday would be "catastrophic" for the project.

Top lawmakers have shown few signs of progress toward crafting a new budget. Department of Administration Commissioner Matt Massman says going past Monday's deadline could hinder a project already on a tight timeline.

Massman joined legislative leaders during negotiations at the governor's residence Tuesday.

He says a special session would put a team of 40 subcontractors on hold. The ongoing renovations have left some public spaces untouched as the Legislature works. Work on some of those areas is set to begin the day after the Legislature is scheduled to adjourn.

Officials hope to finish the renovations by 2017.
