Good Questions: Turkey Eggs, Newspapers, MOA Money Ponds

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Connie from Blaine wants to know: Why don't we eat turkey eggs?

Chickens lay eggs more often than turkeys -- usually once a day versus a turkey's every other day.

Chickens also don't incubate their eggs as long as turkeys, according to the Minnesota Turkey's Growers Association

"They're happy to lay their egg a day and be done with it," MTGA's Lara Durben said.

Turkey eggs are more expensive because turkeys grow bigger and eat more feed than egg-laying chickens. The few turkey eggs on the market go for between $3 and $5 apiece.

"Turkeys are simply more prized for their meat, so their eggs are worth more money to farmers as poults [baby turkeys]," Durben said.

Tharin asks: What happens to the money in the ponds at the Mall of America?

For the past 10 years, the mall has collected the change from its two ponds every month and gives it away to local charities. Registered 501c3 organizations apply to be the recipient of one month's worth of coins.

A selection committee reviews the applications and then assigns them a month. On average, a charity can collect between $900 - $3,000.

In 2015, the mall gave to, among others, Girls Scouts of America Lakes and Pines, Children's Hospital Association, Walk to End Hunger and Simpson Housing Services.

The application process for 2016 begins in June.
