Mike's Mix: Rooftop Patio At Union

It's patio season!  Well, sort of – this early in the season, the weather can have you grabbing for the shorts one day, and the parka the next.  Still, next weekend is Memorial Day weekend and, if you're ready to imbibe outside, Union Rooftop in downtown Minneapolis has the solution for spring's squirrely weather.

Located atop what amounts to a three-story entertainment complex (Rev nightclub is in the basement, and a new chef-driven restaurant called The Workshop opened in the past year on the main level), Union's retractable glass dome can open and close in four minutes, with the push of a button.  When closed, it still allows unrestricted views of the city during inclement weather. During warm and dry weather, the entire roof disappears – no walls and no ceiling come between you and the elements.

With a setup like this, there's no risk of the weather ruining your experience, no matter the season.  And, speaking of: The cocktails on the menu at Union's Rooftop are decidedly summery -- like these.

Jameson Mule

In a pint glass:

  • Muddle 2 to 4 lime wedges
  • Add 1.5 oz – 2oz of Jameson Irish Whiskey
  • Shake over ice and pour into a pint glass
  • Top with ginger beer

Pineapple Express

In a pint glass:

  • Add a bit of simple syrup (about ¾ oz)
  • Muddle 2 fresh lemon wedges and 2 fresh orange wedges
  • Add 1.5 oz – 2 oz of pineapple vodka
  • ½ oz triple sec
  • Shake over ice, and strain into a chilled martini glass
  • Garnish with an orange slice

Taste Test

Unapologetically summery, each of these drinks will transport you to the patio no matter where you're sipping them.

The Jameson Mule is a simple twist on the classic Moscow Mule, giving a more whiskey-forward flavor.

If you're in the mood for something fruitier, the Pineapple Express is an easy-sipping adult pineapple juice.

Union Rooftop has a daily happy hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and hosts brunch each Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. Bottomless mimosas are available for $10 with each brunch.
