1 Injured In St. Paul Duplex Fire

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – One person is in serious condition after a house fire in St. Paul Monday night.

According to the St. Paul Fire Department, crews responded to a call shortly after 11 p.m. of a fire at a duplex in the 840 block of Sherburne Avenue.

Crews said after extinguishing the flames the first floor was uninhabitable.

One victim was found alive, but seriously injured.

After a preliminary investigation, crews believe the fire was caused by the victim's smoking. They believe smoking somehow ignited a chair, which then caused the fire to spread.

The victim was taken to Regions Hospital, where they are listed in serious condition.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
