House Speaker Daudt Hopes For Quick Deal On Education

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — House Republicans think they can quickly reach a special session deal with Gov. Mark Dayton on public school funding.

Dayton has vowed to veto the Legislature's education budget and call lawmakers back. He says the $400 million in new funds lawmakers put up falls short and also wants a statewide preschool program.

The Democratic governor and the House GOP tried to reach an agreement to avert a special session but those talks broke off just before the Legislature adjourned Monday.

House Speaker Kurt Daudt said Wednesday he hopes those final negotiations tee up an easier resolution to the impasse. He says they're willing to put up more funding but calls the preschool initiative unpopular in the Legislature.

Daudt says a special session may have to wait until June or later.
