'My Brother Shot Me': 911 Transcripts Released In Shooting Deaths Of Officer, Son

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Recently released 911 transcripts paint a chilling picture as to what occurred shortly after the fatal shooting of an Elk River police officer and his 27-year-old son.

On Saturday, May 9, authorities say 31-year-old Chris Besser shot and killed his father, 49-year-old Todd Besser, and his brother, Blake Besser. His brother was found in the kitchen of the home and his father was found in the basement – both dead from gunshot wounds.

Chris Besser was arrested shortly after in connection to the slayings. He has since been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

On Wednesday, the Wright County Attorney's Office released the transcripts of 911 calls that were placed after the incident – by both Chris Besser and Blake Besser.

The transcripts are at times disturbing.

According to one transcript, Chris Besser's 911 call begins with him admitting to the crime, saying "Um. This is gonna sound really odd but ah, I ... I ... I ended up, killing my father an' my brother."

He proceeds to tell the Wright County Communications Officer that he's at a gas station in Monticello. When asked what happened, he says, "I guess I don't know I just lost it" and that his father "expected things of me that … that I didn't agree with … an' sounds ridiculous I I know."

Seemingly calm, he later tells the communications officer that he's in "complete compliance" with giving himself up and "ain't, tryin' ta fight or anything." Soon after, he's asked to put the phone down, go outside and put his hands up, which he agrees to, saying, "Alright I can do that."

In the other 911 transcript, Blake Besser – clearly distressed and moaning – tells the communications officer, "My brother shot me." When asked where, he replies, "In the chest."

He then says Chris Besser left already before his speech becomes increasingly less audible. The call ends with a series of "death rattle noises" and sounds of the emergency responders arriving.

In a statement to police, Chris Besser told officers that after getting into an argument with his father, he brooded on the couch before grabbing a .30-30 lever action rifle from the gun cabinet and going to the basement. His father was down there, sitting at the computer, and Chris Besser said he shot him in the back of the head.

Later, when his older brother came home, Chris Besser said he shot him in the abdomen as the 27-year-old entered from the garage. That's when Blake Besser called 911 before dying.

If convicted of both charges, Chris Besser faces a maximum sentence of 80 years in prison. He has a criminal history with convictions for marijuana possession, a traffic violation and a DWI. His next court date is set for 1 p.m. on May 22.
