Mike's Mix: The Red Cow Negroni

Every Saturday, Mike Augustyniak picks up a new cocktail recipe from a local mixologist. This week, he heads to the Red Cow to check out their signature cocktail for Negroni Week.

Red Cow Negroni

  • 1 oz Gordon's Gin
  • 2/3 oz Far North Spirits Solveig Gin
  • 1 oz Cocchi Vermouth di Torino
  • 1/3 oz Tempus Fugit Gran Classico
  • 1/3 oz Campari
  • 1 oz chilled soda water

Mix all ingredients, except water, in a glass. Briefly chill mixture in the freezer (or, mix a frozen glass).

Add ice, and the splash of chilled soda water. Garnish with a grapefruit peel, and serve.

Taste Test
The classic Negroni has been around since 1920, and is one of the easiest cocktails to make; gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth mix in equal parts over ice. If you're going to memorize a recipe, to make a classic cocktail off-the-cuff to impress friends, this might as well be the one! The Red Cow Negroni, developed for Negroni Week, is an effervescent sipper that's not much harder to make than the original.

Adding the floral-flavored Solveig Gin to the juniper-flavored Gordon's rounds the edges of the cocktail, and the bitter-flavored Gran Classico maintains the balance of the cocktail. Soda water adds the effervescence, and the bubbles enhance the cocktail's flavors, bringing them to the forefront. The water also dilutes the cocktail the same amount as the traditional stir-over-ice method; in order to not dilute it too much, chill the spirits in the freezer, as opposed to combining them over ice.
