Seth Meyers Says He Was 'Queer Bombed' In Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Every month, the local event organizer Flip Phone orchestrates an LGBT "takeover" of a nominally straight bar in the Twin Cities.
And last week, former "Saturday Night Live" performer and current late-night TV host Seth Meyers was caught up in the festivities.
Meyers was in town last weekend for a performance at the State Theater. While he was in town, he dropped in at the nearby Marin Restaurant and Bar.
"We walked in and the bar was really crowded," Meyers said on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" this week. "The hostess said, 'We're sorry we're really crowded tonight. If you need a drink you have to get it at the bar. We've been really caught off guard. ... We've been queer bombed.'"
Meyers went on to say that "it's a lot more fun when the bar you go to is being queer bombed. I had the time of my life."
The talk show host also told an anecdote about one of the people he talked with there who appeared to be holding a glow-in-the-dark lightsaber. Only it wasn't a lightsaber.
Alfonso Wenker, who was holding that NSFW prop, said that Meyers "was sweet. He didn't talk much. Very low key and chill."
Flip Phone also hosts a monthly dance night at Honey in Northeast Minneapolis. Their name refers to the era of music they focus on -- pop and R&B from the late '90s and early aughts.
Wenker said that, while the idea for queer bombing didn't originate in Minneapolis, "Chad Kampe and the Flip Phone crew are giving it new life." The Flip Phone bombings have been happening in the Twin Cities since March. The next one will be on July 10.
When asked where he might like to see the next one, Wenker said "I think Betty Danger's has the perfect vibe."
