Driver, 16, Dies In Wright Co. Crash, 2 Passengers Injured

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials in the north metro say a 16-year-old girl from Albertville died last Friday after a car crash in a cornfield.

The Wright County Sheriff's Office said it received a call just after 1:22 a.m. about a single-car crash near the intersection of Garrison Avenue Northeast and County Road 34.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found three teenagers in a black Nissan Altima in a cornfield near a power pole that had been sheared off at the bottom.

Emergency crews extricated the driver, Leah Demessie, from the car, and a helicopter flew her to North Memorial Medical Center.

She died there later on Friday.

A gofundme.com page for Demessie's funeral said she died of severe head trauma.

The sheriff's office said two passengers – 15-year-old Olivia Wageman and 16-year-old Nicole Serpa, both of Rogers – were hospitalized and in stable condition.

The gofundme.com page said the two suffered serious injuries.

All three teens were wearing seat belts, the sheriff's office said.

The crash remains under investigation.
