Minneapolis Police Issue Warning On Phone Scams

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minneapolis Police Department is warning residents about a possible phone scam that's happening around the Twin Cities metro.

Residents have reported receiving phone calls from males and females from a number that matches the Minneapolis Police Department's Fifth Precinct on caller ID. Authorities say the caller identifies themselves as being with the IRS and that the Minneapolis Police Department is going to "put them behind bars."

Authorities say some calls are asking for information about the resident, while others are threatening in nature. Minneapolis Police want to remind residents to never provide personal information over the phone, regardless of who the caller is.

The Minneapolis Police Department said it would never engage in calls of this type. Anyone who receives a similar type of phone call is urged to call their local police precinct immediately.
