Animal Humane Society: Dog Adopted From St. Paul May Have Canine Flu

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Adoptions are on hold at the St. Paul Animal Humane Society because of a possible case of dog flu.

A family adopted an adult Shar Pei mix on June 14, which later showed flu-like symptoms. A blood test came back positive for H3N2, or canine influenza.

A nasal swab test is being examined at the University of Wisconsin for further verification, and AHS is consulting with leading shelter medicine experts.

"As of now, there will be no adoptions that will go out of St. Paul, and no intakes that will come in, and we're doing that out of an abundance of caution until we can assure exactly what's happening in St. Paul," Animal Humane Society President and CEO Janelle Dixon said.

All dogs with kennel cough are being isolated and tested for flu Thursday.

AHS is contacting those who adopted dogs in the last 30 days from the St. Paul location and asking them to call their veterinarian if their dog is showing symptoms.
