Suspect Arrested In Mpls. Mother-Daughter Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Police arrested a man Friday who they say is responsible for shooting a 22-year-old mother and her 15-month-old daughter in a south Minneapolis park Thursday afternoon.

The shooting comes as violent crime is going up in the city of Minneapolis.

There have been 21 murders since the start of the year. There were 13 around this time last year.

Both the mother and daughter are going to be OK, but Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau says this type of violence must stop.

"They're not random, we are solving them because of those interpersonal relationships, because of good witnesses, because of the relationships we have in the community," Harteau said. "People are coming forward which is helping us make progress in those cases."

Police typically see more crime during the summer months since the warmer weather brings more people outside.

But Harteau is confident her department is doing everything it can to keep those numbers down. She says cooperation from the community is crucial.

"Our community deserves better than the violence that has been seen on our streets lately especially that of an innocent mother and child yesterday," she said. "I am incredibly proud of the swift actions of our responding officers, investigators and members of the new GIT, Gang Interdiction Team, who made such a quick arrest."

Police have not released the name of the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.
