Minnesota State Fair Announces New Foods For 2015

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It is the day many Minnesota foodies have been waiting for: The Minnesota State Fair just announced all the delicious new food for this year's fair.

The fair released the list Tuesday that features 40 new foods and 11 new frozen treats.

The non-frozen foods that really stand out on the list include the Burger Dog, Kimchi Poutine, Mac & Cheese Cupcake, Sara's Tipsy Pies, Sriracha Balls, Sweet Potato Taco, Shanghaied Henri's International Tacos, Walleye Stuffed Mushrooms – and Hot Tail (a roasted pig tail!).

This year's new frozen items definitely have a theme of hot and sweet. They include BBQ Pickle Ice Cream, Caramel Chocolate-Dipped Bacon Ice Cream Bar, Chocolate Jalapeño Ice Cream, Fire and Ice Kreme and an Espresso Float.

Notably downplayed this year is new on-a-stick foods, but there are still two more to check out: Stuffed Italian Meatloaf On-a-Stick and Tikka On-a-Stikka.

There are also four new vendors this year: Beef and Turkey Jerky by Josef Abel Meats, Daryl's Dog House, MinneSnowii Shave Ice and Sara's Tipsy Pies.

Sara Hayden of Sara's Tipsy Pies says she never expected after just a few years of business to be one of the elite new vendors.

"It's a game changer for us," Hayden said.

For the past three years, Hayden has been running her business out of the Marine on St. Croix General Store.

Hadyen partners with local beer, wine and whiskey makers to add just a little something extra to her fruity pies.

"They are child-safe," Hayden said.

Returning vendors, like The Original Gabes by the Park owner Tom "Giggles" Weiss, work hard to mix it up.

"We've been here 16 years," Weiss said. "This year we will have the Walleye Stuffed Mushrooms."

Minnesota State Fair food spokesperson Dennis Larson says only nine of this year's new foods are fried.

"It's going toward more high-end and internationally- or culturally-diverse food," Larson said. "Sriracha was … the hot new product this year. I think we have six things, including an ice cream with Sriracha on it."

Larson says an average vendor earns about $50,000 from a state fair, and some of that money has to go toward expenses.

On the high end, Larson says Martha's Cookie Jar earns about $1 million.
