New Law Classifies ATV Trail Restrictions By Vehicle Width
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A new law is adding width to the criteria that determines where all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) can ride.
In the past, ATVs were classified by weight and size. But starting July 1, width will be added into the equation.
An ATV with a total width of 50 inches or less (from the outside of one tire rime to the other) is considered a Class 1 ATV. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, these types of vehicles are usually designated for a single rider who straddles the machine and uses handlebars to steer, but some include rollover protection, seat belts and steering wheels.
The width of a Class 2 ATV is between 50 and 65 inches, under the new law. These types of vehicles usually have a steering wheel with the driver and passenger seated side-by-side.
The DNR says ATV owners don't have to get a new registration, as long as their current one is unexpired. However, riders should be on the lookout for signs that designate Class 1 and Class 2 trails.
