Phil Housley Gets The Call To Hockey Hall Of Fame

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Hockey Hall of Fame announced its class of 2015 on Monday. South St. Paul native and former Buffalo Sabre Phil Housley was among those chosen.

He played 21 years in the National Hockey League. Eight of them were with the Buffalo Sabres, who drafted Housley with the No. 6 pick in the 1982 draft.

He was chosen a seven-time All-Star and went down as the fourth-leading scorer among defensemen in league history. He also won a silver medal with Team USA in the 2002 Olympics.

Housley told WCCO's Dave Lee he got the call Monday night.

"It's a tremendous honor and you wait for that call every year. Sometimes you get disappointed. There are a lot of great guys out there," Housley said.

He says he's grateful to his parents and to the coaches who helped him along the way.

"And most importantly Doug Woog. I played four years under him in high school. He has had a huge impact on me as player, and developed me and helped me make that jump from high school to the pros," he said.

He was drafted right out of high school in 1982. Housley is currently an assistant coach with the Nashville Predators. He will be inducted at a ceremony on Nov. 9 in Toronto.
