Woman Dies After Being Thrown From Boat, Driver Arrested On DWI

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials in northern Minnesota say a 50-year-old woman died after being thrown from a boat on the Fourth of July and the driver was arrested for boating while intoxicated.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday to a 911 call saying that a woman was unresponsive in Cass Lake.

When deputies got to the scene, they learned the victim, Brenda Lois Larson of Eden Prairie, had been in a boat with the driver and a 4-year-old child.

While traveling on the water, all three were thrown from the boat. The driver, 45-year-old Matthew Allen Kinghorn of Minnetonka, and the child were rescued by passing fishermen.

Larson was found unresponsive in the water and taken to shore. Emergency crews then took her to Cass Lake Hospital, where she later died.

Deputies arrested Kinghorn on suspicion of drunken boating. He was being held at Beltrami County Jail, pending formal charges.

The incident remains under investigation.
