DNR: Zebra Mussels Confirmed In Forest Lake
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The presence of the invasive species zebra mussels has been confirmed in Forest Lake, the Minnesota Department of Resources announced Friday.
The DNR says a suspected zebra mussel was found on a rock on the east shore of Forest Lake last week. DNR biologists then inspected the lake and found 11 more zebra mussels along the eastern shore. More zebra mussels were found along the south shore, too.
According to the DNR, the amount and distribution of the zebra mussels indicates that a population is likely established and natural reproduction is occurring – meaning treatment would not be effective and is not planned.
The lake will now be designated as a zebra mussel infested water to limit further spread of the invasive species.
This is the fourth Minnesota lake in 2015 with a newly discovered zebra mussel population.
