Minn. Woman Going To The Olympics, Carrying On Family Tradition

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Katie Johnson, 23, has just qualified for the 2016 games in Brazil, playing rugby.

"I'm so proud of this young lady," said her grandfather, Don Johnson.

Katie is carrying on the family tradition, as Don himself qualified for the 1948 games in speed skating.

Katie now lives in Chula Vista, California, where she is training for the games.

"Ever since I was little, the Olympics has always fascinated me." Katie said.

She said that while she has qualified, it's not a done deal.

If the coach finds a better more talented player, she could lose her spot.

She works hard and admits it's a tough game.

"If you get hit hard, it's all in love," she said. "If you can take it from one of the best in the United States, you can take it from the best in another country."

Katie played Rugby for Hopkins and went to college at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.

She has left college for now as she trains for the games.
