Police: Driver Hit Gas By Mistake, Backed Into St. Louis Park Restaurant

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Authorities have released more information on how a car smashed into a St. Louis Park restaurant Wednesday afternoon.

According to a police report, the crash happened just before 1 p.m. at Yum! Kitchen and Bakery, located at 4000 Minnetonka Boulevard.

The police report indicates a red Lexus 4-door sedan was backing away from a parking spot when the driver heard a horn honk. The female driver stopped to let a dark colored vehicle pass. As the driver started backing up again, the right front tire of the vehicle hit the curb.

The driver thought she hit the brake to straighten her car out, but told police she now believes she must have hit the gas pedal. That caused the vehicle to go in reverse across the parking lot and into Yum! Restaurant, smashing through front glass doors and into the dining area.

The vehicle stopped at the western wall of the restaurant. Police say the driver was wearing her seat belt and was not injured.

Two people inside the restaurant when the car came smashing through were taken to area hospitals for non-life threatening injuries. The restaurant was back open for business Thursday morning.
