Get Movin' Monday: August Deals

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- We turned a calendar page over the weekend. And that means we still have plenty of bathing suit season to enjoy. They are just one of the great bargains in the month of August.

Nancy Ngo of the Pioneer Press Gets Us Movin' this Monday with other cheap finds:

BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Back to school sales now start as early as July with discounts as much as 30 percent. So what you're seeing in August are even steeper price cuts on those items -- from art supplies to backpacks -- slashed at clearance-like prices. If history repeats itself, look for backpacks discounted by as much as 50 percent everywhere from large retailers to specialty brand stores (Land's End).

SUMMER CLOTHES

Retailers have back to school on their minds, and with that comes fall wardrobes. So what you'll see are clearance sales on summer clothes by as much as 70 percent off as stores clear out their inventory. Swimwear, especially, is a category in which you'll see some of the steepest discounts on clothing apparel. Why not? You still have at least one more month of beach and pool season. Or you can stock up for next year.

LINENS

It's a great time to stock up on those blankets, sheets, pillows and towels. Retailers know that linens are hot commodities this time of the year with everyone from college kids to newlyweds, and they're competing for a piece of the pie with some of the biggest markdowns you'll see all year round.

GRILLS

Starting in August and into September, stores will start offer markdowns on grills and accessories by as much as 50 percent off. So if your outdoor cooking device is on its last leg, or you're itching for an upgrade without spending a fortune, this is the time to buy and take advantage of clearance sales on one of summer's hottest commodities that can also carry over into the fall.

WINE

Grapes for wine are usually picked in the fall and thus begins the winemaking process for the coming year. As a result, many wineries will put the current year's bottles on sale this time of year to make room for the new harvest. Some wineries are also open seasonally, giving winemakers extra incentive to sell bottles before the cold weather months.
