Victims ID'd In First Avenue's Ceiling Collapse

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minneapolis Police Department has identified five victims involved in the partial ceiling collapse at First Avenue Wednesday evening.

The victims include: 27-year-old Danielle Leikam of Inver Grove Heights, 27-year-old Samantha Urban of Apple Valley, 25-year-old Jonathan Elgard of Crystal, 31-year-old Alexander Smyth of Minneapolis, and 44-year-old Jenelle Mankie of Walker.

Leikam is the only remaining victim hospitalized and is in satisfactory condition. Urban, who is Leikam's friend, says that Leikam should be released from the hospital Saturday and probably suffered the worst injuries.

The witness was also identified: 34-year-old James Lowman of Minneapolis.

The collapse happened around 10:15 p.m. during a "Theory of a Deadman" concert. According to the Minneapolis Assistant Chief of Administration, a 20' by 30' section of lathe and plaster ceiling collapsed and fell on the crowd during the show.

Building official Patrick Higgins says First Avenue was last inspected in 2013 and met all codes.

The building will reopen once the ceiling is demolished, the sprinkler system is repaired and everything is re-inspected.
