New Moving Company Helps Customers And College Students

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Most people hate moving. It's strenuous on your body if you do the lifting yourself, and it can be strenuous on your wallet if you hire a company.

But one company is offering a solution to the heavy lifting that also helps college students.

Bellhops is based out of Chattanooga, Tenn.

It connects college students with customers who have a small or medium size move.

Bellhops are available in 134 markets across the country. The company currently contracts about 45 students from the Twin Cities.

Wallace Hicks, a sophomore at the U of M, is a Bellhop.

"It was a great, quick site for college students to get money and so I signed up and got hired right away," Hicks said.

Bellhop students can make $13 to $15 an hour per move, if they chose the captain position.

The captain is responsible for reaching out to the customer before and after every move and communicating with headquarters if there are any issues related to the move or scheduling conflicts.

Bellhops allows Hicks, a business major, to network while he's also at work.

"You meet tons of people, companies, CEO's," Hicks said. "I've met a lot of people, made a lot of connections. It's really nice for marketing."

The list of requirements to become a Bellhop is smaller than the amount of stuff they move. They have to be enrolled in college, must be a hard worker and able to lift heavy items.

Davis Ellingson attends college in Sioux Falls, S.D. He's home for the summer; working instead of resting.

"When you have a lot of big things, you have to make every little inch matter," Ellingson said as he hauled a load into the moving truck.

The company has more than 5,000 Bellhops across the country.

College students go through screening and a background checks to put customers at ease.
