Looking For A Tech Job? There Are Plenty In Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- If you're thinking of a career in technology, you're in the right place. Tech jobs are growing faster in Minnesota than any other state.

According to the technology job postings site dice.com, Minnesota ranks No. 1 for technology job growth, followed by Utah and Nebraska.

"We've seen over the last few years a real increase to hire top technical employees," University of St. Thomas Engineering Professor John Abraham said.

With big name headquarters like 3M and General Mills, as well as innovative medical device companies like Medtronic and St. Jude Medical, there's a high need for tech-savvy employees. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found hiring in the technology field increased 8.26 percent over the last six months in Minnesota.

"Those big companies need small companies to supply their products to them so it's a really a combination of big and small companies that's created this surge," Abraham said.

California and New York still have the highest number of technology jobs, but the hiring rate is slower. Unemployment in the technology field is on the decline all over the country.

"If people are thinking of a career choice in a challenging but rewarding area, technology and engineering that's where it's at," Abraham said.

A representative for career services at the University of St. Thomas said the most requested recruitment from employers are students in software and app development.
