Washington Post Reporter Invited To Tour 'Ugliest County'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Residents in northern Minnesota want to convince a Washington Post reporter that Red Lake County is not, in fact, the ugliest county in the nation.

People there rolled out the red carpet on Thursday for Christopher Ingraham.

Ingraham's original article was based on USDA statistics that showed Red Lake County was the worst in the nation, based on climate and scenery.

The Post said Red Lake County is the only landlocked county in the U.S. that is surrounded by just two neighboring counties. It also adds that its "flat plains" topography and its cold winters make it pretty bad.

During his trip, he was invited to take a kayak trip down the river, enjoy trail rides, take farm tours and eye a look at surrounding towns.

After just a few hours, Ingraham said his opinion was already changing, and he promised to take the pictures back to Washington and take a second look at the original data.

Most of the lowest-ranked counties in the original article were along the Minnesota-North Dakota border.
