Guthrie Kicks Off New Season Under New Artistic Director Haj

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Guthrie Theater is opening a new season under a new artistic director.

Joseph Haj comes to the Guthrie from PlayMakers Repertory Theatre in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Haj succeeds Joe Dowling, who stepped down this summer after two decades of leading the Tony Award-winning Minneapolis theater.

The Guthrie kicks off the new season with Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird." Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1960 novel explores racial injustice in the Deep South as attorney Atticus Finch prepares to defend an African-American man accused of raping a white woman.

Broadway veteran Baylen Thomas plays Finch while Mary Bair and Isadora Swann will alternate in performances as Finch's young daughter, Scout. Guthrie regular John Miller-Stephany directs.

Opening night is Sept. 18. The play runs through Oct. 18.
