Hennepin Co. Att'y Speaks Out About Downtown Gun Violence
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- After a weekend of crime in the heart of the Minneapolis tourism district, the Hennepin County Attorney is speaking out.
On Wednesday, Mike Freeman told the Minneapolis City Council's public safety committee gun violence is a very real thing in downtown.
"Too often today the dispute is resolved with a gun and it shouldn't be," Freeman said. "We've got to talk to our kids. Parents have to do that, coaches have to do it, city council members, county attorneys, we have to enhance the dialogue why carrying guns to solve disputes makes no sense."
Around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, after bars closed, officers say a man shot several rounds from a semi-automatic handgun towards the intersection of Hennepin and 7th Street. Officers say there's video showing another man also firing a weapon.
Around 50 people, including some officers, were in the line of fire. Six people were injured by bullets.
Two suspects were scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Though Freeman made his speech at the request of a city council member, the council said they cannot change gun laws, only legislature can.
