Gophers' Brooks Named Big Ten Co-Freshmen Of The Week
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Freshman running back Shannon Brooks had a big day in Minnesota's 41-13 win at Purdue on Saturday, and he was recognized by the Big Ten for it on Monday.
The league announced that Brooks was named a Big Ten Co-Freshmen of the Week along with Jabrill Peppers of Michigan. Brooks had 17 carries for 176 yards, an average of 10.4 yards per carry. Brooks scored on a 71-yard run early in the third quarter that gave the Gophers a 17-6 lead.
The 176 yards is the most a Gophers freshman running back has had since 2003. It's the first-career award for Brooks, who is averaging 7.9 yards per carry and has three touchdowns this season.
The Gophers (4-2, 1-1) host Nebraska at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium. Jerry Kill is looking for his third straight win over the Cornhuskers.
