Hutchinson Police Officers Shoot & Kill Suspect; Officer Injured

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Authorities say a suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting west of the Twin Cities Sunday night.

The Hutchinson Police Department responded to the 500 block of Harmony Lane SW in Hutchinson at about 4:13 p.m. Sunday on a report of a verbal disturbance. When officers arrived, they spoke with an adult male suspect and after a period of time, a struggle ensued and shots were fired. An officer at the scene was shot and injured. The officer was taken to a Hutchinson Hospital before being airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center with a non-life threatening leg injury.

Officers returned fire on the suspect, who was shot and killed at the scene.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the McLeod County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol provided assistance at the scene.

The Hutchinson Police Department said it's the first officer-involved shooting in the city in two years, and the last time an officer was shot happened in 1989.

The suspect has not been identified. The incident is under investigation.
