Kylie's Kids: Meet Zach

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- This week's Kylie's Kid has had more than 60 surgeries, but despite all the time he has spent in the hospital, he's still able to do what he loves. And what he loves is baseball.

Zach, 11, is one of those rare Twins Fans who's actually met his idol: Joe Mauer.

"It was really cool to meet him and he actually signed my glove," said Zach. "Super excited, I thought it was really cool. I went to school and showed all my friends it."

Not only is this fifth grader a baseball fan, he plays it, too. It's amazing, because Zach has gone through more than 60 surgeries in his life, including two for a new organ.

"I've had two kidney transplants," said Zach.

"To see my child out there playing a sport is a miracle in itself because he wasn't supposed to do anything," Stacey, Zach's mom, said.

Zach was just a baby when he had his first transplant.

"My dad donated my first one at 11 months old," said Zach.

"You don't expect a baby to need an organ to live, don't expect that at all," said Stacey.

Then, three years ago, it was time for a new one.

"I was fighting for my child's life because I didn't know how much longer he had," said Stacey.

Zach's mom took part in a transplant chain.

"I'm his mom, I felt helpless because I'm not a match, I was helpless," Stacey said.

She donated her kidney to another young boy, so Zach could get the one he needed to save his life.

This time Zach is back at Masonic for a surgery he has every few months.

Then it's all about Halloween weekend like everyone else.
