Report: Gov. Dayton Plans To Ask For Real ID Extension

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Gov. Mark Dayton plans to ask for an extension giving the state more time to comply with Real ID requirements.

According to the Star Tribune, a spokesman and top legislative leaders confirmed the plans.

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress to boost security and deter identity fraud. But Minnesota lawmakers blocked them in 2009, citing privacy concerns.

An extension would end uncertainty over whether travelers would be barred from boarding domestic flights with just their Minnesota I.D. It also averts a costly special session.

Authorities will start enforcing Real ID's at airport checkpoints in January.
