Sheriff: 1 Dead, 3 Hurt In St. Croix County Head-On Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- One person was killed and three others were injured after a head-on crash in western Wisconsin Sunday afternoon, according to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities responded at about 12:45 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 65 about a quarter mile south of Wagner Dr. in the Village of Roberts. An investigation showed a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix being driven by an 18-year-old from Eau Claire, Wis., was heading southbound on Highway 65. A 2007 Buick Lucerne being driven by a 61-year-old from River Falls, Wis., was heading northbound.

Authorities say the Pontiac crossed the center line and hit the Buick head-on.  The driver of the Buick, identified as Bonny J. Britton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Pontiac, identified as Cody D. Carlson, was taken to Hudson Hospital before being transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Two other inside the Pontiac were transported to Regions Hospital with injuries. Authorities say Britton, Carlson and a female passenger in the Pontiac were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. A male passenger in the Pontiac was not wearing a seat belt.

It's the 12th traffic fatality of the year in St. Croix County. Highway 65 was closed for about five hours while the crash was under investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office, the Medical Examiner's Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
