Michael Foods Moving Toward Cage-Free Eggs

MINNETONKA, Minn. (AP) — One of the country's largest egg producers, Minnesota-based Michael Foods, has joined the growing list of companies moving toward cage-free eggs.

In a statement Wednesday, Michael Foods' president and CEO, Jim Dwyer, says "cage-free is emerging as the likely future of the egg industry." He says customers are increasingly requesting cage-free eggs and egg products. So he says the company, part of St. Louis-based Post Holdings, is working with suppliers to transition to cage-free housing.

The company, whose brands include Crystal Farms, didn't announce a timeline.

The Humane Society of the United States welcomed the announcement. CEO Wayne Pacelle (pah-SEL'-ee) says it means a brighter future for hens.

Other large food companies have announced similar steps. Minnesota-based General Mills said Nov. 24 that it has set a deadline of 2025.
