FBI: Murder Rate Down, But Mass Shootings On Rise
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The murder rate is down overall in the United States. But violence like the San Bernardino shootings is becoming more common.
The FBI studied active shootings where gunmen were "actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area." It found 160 cases between 2000 and 2013.
There was an average of six active shootings per year in the first half of the study.
But that number jumped to sixteen per year in the second half. Active shooters killed or wounded more than 1,000 people. Sixty percent of the shootings ended before police could arrive.
