Republicans Have Faster Plan To Fix IDs For Domestic Flights

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Republicans are countering confusion about how to meet stronger federal standards for boarding airplanes with a faster plan.

It's still unclear when the federal government will require new IDs for domestic flights but state officials say it could come later this year. Addressing the dispute is a key issue in a possible special session.

The House GOP submitted draft legislation that wouldn't have updated driver's licenses to meet federal requirements until at least 2018. Gov. Mark Dayton criticized the proposal as far too slow given the looming deadline that could disrupt travel.

House Speaker Kurt Daudt says that date is flexible. He unveiled another proposal on Wednesday that would set the changes in motion this year.

Lawmakers will start weeding through a special session agenda on Thursday.
