2 GOP Candidates Run For Party Nod In Race For Senate Seat
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Two Republicans are ready to square off for the party's nod to run for an open state Senate seat.
The state was set to hold a special primary on Tuesday for the Senate seat covering suburbs north of Minneapolis. The opening was triggered when former GOP Sen. Branden Petersen resigned this fall.
Former Rep. Jim Abeler is eyeing the seat as a route to return to the Legislature after eight terms in the state House. He's running against party-endorsed activist Andy Aplikowski in the primary.
The winner will run against Democratic candidate Roger Johnson in the early February special election.
